Workshops

Speech & Tech organized a series of workshops, supported by CLARIN, aimed at exploring and developing approaches to working with spoken data across disciplines. The first workshop, held in Oxford in 2016, focused on assessing needs and practices related to opening up spoken archives and led to the formation of the network. Subsequent workshops in Utrecht and Arezzo (2016–2017) concentrated on the development of a transcription workflow for oral history interviews, including digitization, automatic speech recognition and transcription platforms. Later activities, such as the 2018 München workshop, expanded the scope to include annotation and analysis, with particular attention to the challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration of digital tools into research practices. Workshops were designed to combine hands-on experimentation with methodological reflection, aiming to bridge disciplinary boundaries and varying levels of technical expertise. Planned activities in 2020–2021 were partly interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with some initiatives continuing online. Overall, these workshops, together with related presentations and outputs, contributed to the development, testing and dissemination of tools and methods for the study of spoken data, including the Transcription Portal.
